Remove the pedestrian crossing at the end of the bridge in Newhaven

We the undersigned petition the council to remove the pedestrian crossing to the west of the bridge in Newhaven, on both side of the carriageway in order to help ease the traffic congestion on the A259

This pedestrian crossing is unnecessary. There is another crossing just metres away on the westbound carriageway, people crossing here can walk down Bridge Street and then cross the eastbound carriageway at the crossing by Denton Island.
In total this route would only add an additional 200 steps in order to arrive at the same point by Denton Island bridge as using the current route.
The benefit would be that the traffic will stop at the Bridge Street crossing in two lanes, and will therefore clear more quickly when the lights change after somebody has used the crossing. It would also allow the traffic joining from North Way to filter in as traffic slows when the crossing is being used.
The knock-on effect would be a shortening of the queue back down Drove Road, which may help traffic flow in that area.
Please note however this alone will not solve the traffic issue, it will only ease it to a degree, which has to be a good thing.
