Unaccompanied Refugee Children in East Sussex

We the undersigned petition the council to agree to accept its fair share of unaccompanied asylum seeking children (“UASCs”) and to notify the Home Office of its readiness to accept responsibility for 10 children per year over the next 10 years. This is in addition to UASCs moving from other local authorities under the National Transfer Protocol Arrangements.

2018 marks 80 years since British communities took in 10,000 unaccompanied child refugees fleeing Nazi persecution in Europe. Today, a new group of refugee children in Europe and beyond are in desperate need of safe routes to protection.

We believe that ESCC can and should play a part in helping to bring these children to safety. The number of 10 a year represents East Sussex’s pro rata share of the proposed national total of 10,000 children over the next 10 years.

The plight of unaccompanied refugee children is a defining issue of our time, and we want Britain to be on the right side of history now, as it was 80 years ago. East Sussex can help make this happen.
