40mph limit on A259 Seaford to Newhaven

We the undersigned petition the council to Reduce the speed limit on this dangerous stretch of road to 40mph, enforced by speed cameras, This will add less than one minute to journey times but will save lives and prevent congestion.

Recently there were three accidents in one week - including the terrible fatality at the junction with Marine Drive.

Repeated accidents have ruined many lives. They have also shut the road, most recently for nine hours, regularly causing traffic chaos as far away as Lewes and Brighton.

The planned redesign of the Bishopstone Road junction is not enough on its own. The road is just too fast along its whole length, with many serious accidents at other turn-offs including Marine Drive, Stud Farm and Foxhole Farm, and both the buses and the bike lane are marooned by traffic.
Whilst we know budgets are tight, a 40mph limit could be enforced by speed cameras at no cost. My son was run over trying to get to the bus stop on a 60mph stretch without a traffic island. Fortunately he recovered but what would a lifetime of care have cost council tax payers? Or worse?

It makes no sense for drivers to travel at dangerous speeds on this stretch, only to sit in traffic when they reach Newhaven or Seaford. A 40mph limit would add just 51 seconds to journey times.

Please act before more lives are lost.
