Arlington Road residents have faced increasing parking
difficulties in recent years due to unrestricted sections of the
road being used as free long-term parking by non-residents. The
lack of consistent regulation has led to the following
issues:
• Residents struggling to park near their own homes, often
having to park on distant streets or avoid using their cars
altogether.
• Commuters and holidaymakers abusing the road as free
parking, leaving vehicles for extended periods and reducing space
availability for locals.
• Inconsiderate and unsafe parking, including vehicles
blocking driveways, parking too close to junctions, and causing
accessibility issues for emergency services and refuse
collection.
Monetary benefits for the council and community:
A permit-only or shared-use scheme will generate additional income
for the council through:
• Resident permit fees, contributing to enforcement and road
maintenance.
• Pay-and-display revenue from short-term visitors, balancing
parking availability with financial benefits for local
infrastructure.
• Fines for non-compliance, ensuring fair enforcement and
discouraging misuse of parking spaces.
Benefits for residents and the community:
• Increased parking availability, allowing residents to park
near their homes rather than competing with non-residents.
• Safer and more organized street parking, reducing congestion
and improving emergency access.
• Consistent and fair regulation, preventing displacement of
commuter parking from one end of the road to the other.
• Encouragement of responsible parking habits, reducing
vehicle abandonment and dangerous parking at junctions.
A previous petition for parking controls did not gain enough traction, but resident frustrations have since grown, and the problem has significantly worsened. There is now strong local support for this change.
We urge East Sussex County Council to prioritize this issue and introduce a structured parking scheme to protect residents’ access, enhance safety, and establish a fairer parking system for all.
